Somewhat belatedly for this website, great to see network co-leader and network member, Dr Richard Gale and Professor Huw Thomas both of Cardiff University, publishing this timely book. Race, Faith and Planning in Britain adopts a Critical Race Theory perspective to analyze and discuss challenges of planning in contemporary multi-ethnic Britain. Exploring how planning is affected by and affects the racialization of social relations, this book charts the history of the UK planning system’s approach, in terms of the spatial consequences of immigration, and discourses of diversity, cohesion, citizenship and belonging. Network leaders shortlisted for RTPI award

Dr Richard Gale and Dr Andrew Rogers, co-leaders of the Faith and Place network, have been shortlisted for the RTPI Awards for Research Excellence 2018. Based on a portfolio of work by Gale and Rogers both individually and collaboratively, Gale commented “That’s made my day!” The ceremony takes place in Sheffield on 3rd September – watch this space for the results.

The Faith and Place network is delighted to announce the publication of our Wales policy briefing this month. You can download an electronic version in English or Welsh here. Dual language print versions are being sent out to local planning authorities and religious organisations in Wales over the next few weeks. The Archbishop of Wales, Barry Morgan, had this to say about the July 2016 Wales policy briefing:

Bydd y canllaw hwn yn cael ei groesawu’n fawr, a’i werthfawrogi’n arbennig gan grwpiau ffydd nad ydynt yn ddigon ffodus i gael cefnogaeth adrannau eiddo sefydliadol, yn ogystal â chynllunwyr sy’n ceisio cael dealltwriaeth well o’r anghenion a’r posibiliadau o fewn eu cymunedau.

This guide is very welcome, and will be particularly appreciated by faith groups who are not fortunate enough to be backed up by organisational property departments, and by planners seeking a better understanding of the needs and possibilities within their communities.

After a long year of deliberations, the AHRC Faith and Place network has produced a policy briefing containing 15 recommendations for faith groups and planners and other interested parties.

The policy briefing will be launched at the House of Commons on Thursday 15th October, 5-7pm, sponsored by Rt Hon Stephen Timms MP, the labour party faith envoy. The launch takes place in the Jubilee room to an invited audience of planners, faith group leaders, MPs, local government representatives, academics and civil society organisations.

The policy briefing addresses five policy areas emerging from the network, namely Understanding One Another, Community, Equality & Diversity, Sharing Good Practice and the Planning Framework.
